Waste Not
At Newell Dining Hall,
leftovers are getting new
life since a composting program began in September.
Uneaten food no longer
gets chucked into a dump-ster but instead is put into
a composting bag that is
picked up three times a
week by Waste Neutral
Group, a local firm.
It’s a simple process
that reduces what goes
into landfills. Food scraps
account for some 13
percent, or 32 million tons,
of the total garbage
generated nationwide,
according to the Environ-
mental Protection Agency.
Chartwells, TU’s dining
service, estimates that last
waste collected, Waste
Neutral will provide the
university with 40 pounds
of compost for use in
campus landscaping.
