1960s
W. Lee Hammond ’60 EDUC of Salisbury,
Md., was elected as president of the AARP for
2010–2012. A retired educator, Hammond began
his 30-year career in education in Wicomico
County, Md., as a classroom teacher, then served
as a school administrator for 25 years. He was
also president of the Maryland Retired Teachers
Association and a two-term member of the
Maryland Commission on Aging.
Sherman Silverman ’63 GEOG retired
from Prince George’s Community College after
41 years as a professor of geography, history and
political science. Silverman has received a number
of national awards including the Distinguished
Teaching Achievement Award from the National
Council for Geographic Education in 1993 and
an Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award from the
American Association of Geographers in 1995.
1970s
Lynn Hellwig ’72 HIST was elected to the
board of directors of the Hearth Foundation,
which was founded in 1987 and provides housing
for homeless women with children in Tucson, Ariz.
Blaine Taylor ’72 HIST published his ninth
book, Hitler’s Engineers: Fritz Todt and Albert
Speer –Master Builders of the Third Reich. A
selection of the Military Book Club, this is the first
book to pair the two engineers who served the
Nazi regime.
Robert Frisby ’74 retired as a captain in the
U.S. Navy Dental Corps in 2007 after 29 years. He
is a civilian dentist at the Naval Medical Center in
San Diego and treats Marine recruits. He and his
wife have called San Diego home for the last 20
years. They have two daughters.
Susan Hughen ’76 and Kim Hand ’91
have been married since June 27, 2009. Hughen
continues to work for Northrop Grumman Corporation, a global security company. Hand retired as
a golf pro from Pine Ridge in Baltimore County.
The couple live in North Carolina.
